On 8 July 1497 Vasco da Gama led a fleet of four ships with a crew of 170 men from Restelo in Lisbon, most likely from a location near to where the Monument of Discoveries and Tower of Belem is today. Let's trace their journey in Belem!

FORT COCHIN & LISBON'S CROWS

The coat of arms of Lisbon commemorates the voyage of the relics of Saint Vincent, to the city. According to legend, ravens protected his graves and even accompanied him on his voyage. Their craws are heard in Fort Cochin.

THE PORTABLE ALTAR OF VASCO DA GAMA

ZUZANA ZWIEBEL

According to tradition, this altar went with Vasco da Gama on board the ship San Gabriel on the maiden voyage to India in 1497. The inside of the lid has a religious painting of Christ on the cross and three liturgical texts for the celebration of Mass services.
